How do I use Library of Congress call numbers?
How to find print books and journals on the shelves.
Answer
Most UMSL Library items use Library of Congress (LC) call numbers as a method to organize where they are shelved. A location is also used to indicate where the item is located in the building (Level 1, Level 2, etc.) (see the link below for maps).
The LC classification system is arranged alphabetically. Letters are used to indicate the primary subject area(s).
Call numbers for a book or journal are displayed in Discover@UMSL and in the catalog. We currently assign call numbers for electronic resources, only print items.
