How can I find and use electronic books (ebooks)?

Answer

Electronic books (ebooks) can be found through Discover@UMSL, the Journals and Ebooks by Title page, and through the individual collections listed in the Database list.

Find out how to use e-books at https://libguides.umsl.edu/using-ebooks/.

Important note:

Consider if it is necessary to access the book offline.  Most ebooks can be read online without downloading (EBSCO, ProQuest) - this is the easiest and most reliable method.

Unfortunately, EBSCO's ebooks open to a page which makes it look like it is necessary to download the book before reading.  Instead, scroll down to the Table of Contents and click a chapter to begin reading.

Only some ebooks can be downloaded and read offline.  If the item is DRM protected, you will most likely need Adobe Digital Editions before trying to download the PDF.  Adobe Digital Editions ties the ebook either to your device, or to your Adobe ID, and can be problematic to use.

Some books are DRM-free.  Many ebooks on the JSTOR and Wiley platforms can be downloaded without DRM, usually as book chapters.
