How can I use Discover@UMSL, Databases, and other tools to find articles and books?

Answer

  • Discover@UMSL: Search for articles, books, and other resources using keywords. Refine the results using the facets on the left. Discover@UMSL searches MANY, but not ALL of our resources. If you need more specific or focused results, try searching the individual databases.
  • Database List: Search the list by name or sort by subject and/or type of resource (text, images, statistics, etc.).
  • Journals and Ebooks By Title: Search to see if a particular journal or ebook title is available through the UMSL Libraries. For example, if you wonder if UMSL has access to the "Journal of applied behavior analysis" you would enter that title and the Publication Finder will display what UMSL has in electronic and print for that journal. ISSN numbers can also be used to search (change the drop-down option).
  • Internet: In addition to the resources purchased by UMSL, there are many good resources on the internet.  However, please keep the following in mind:
    • Library Databases contain evaluated information suitable for academic research. These databases are made available to current UMSL faculty, staff, and students.
    • Open Internet - Anyone can put a site on the Internet. Only a small percentage of the information is suitable for scholarly research.  Consider the viewpoint and intention of web page's author.  Are they neutral and unbiased?  Are they qualified to write on the subject, or is it an opinion?  Do they have a financial, political or other interest in presenting the information?  If you're unsure, please ask a librarian or your professor for help.

For lists of resources arranged by subject, see the Library's Research Guides.

If you are not on campus, see our Remote Library Services guide for information on how to access library databases and resources from both on-campus and off-campus.
