Browser problems: Login problems, or errors while using library resources

Browser Tips & Troubleshooting Recommendations

Answer

Having problems accessing UMSL's electronic books, journals & databases?

Many problems are caused by issues with the browser.  Symptoms include errors while logging in, errors such as "400 Bad Request Request Header Or Cookie Too Large," "Bad Message 431 reason: Request Header Fields Too Large," or similar "400" errors.

  • What error are you seeing?
    • If you're seeing the UM System SSO error page, there may be something wrong with your SSO, such as a cached old password, a mis-typed password, or a password that need to be reset.  Try resetting your password on ITS page (link below).
    • If you're seeing an EBSCO error, such as Error 103, this may indicate that you're starting from a bad link.  The information contained in the link may be out of date, or someone may have given you a temporary link instead of a Permalink (Permalinks can be found under the "Share" link on EBSCO's pages.
      Examples:
      • Permalink - should work indefinitely:
        https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&AuthType=guest&bquery=Huckleberry+Finn&cli0=LB&clv0=LB+MU+*&cli1=FT1&clv1=Y&type=0&searchMode=And&site=eds-live&scope=site&custid=096-820&groupid=main&profile=edsfolio
      • Temporary link - will not work beyond the current session:
https://eds.p.ebscohost.com/eds/results?vid=1&sid=a1f389a3-f707-4737-aaca-f67714900336%40redis&bquery=Huckleberry+Finn&bdata=JkF1dGhUeXBlPXNzbyejbGkwPUxCJmNsdjA9TEIrTUVrKiZjbGkxPUZUMSZjbHYxPVkmdHlwZT0wJnNlYXJjaE1vZGU9QW5kJnNpdGU9ZWRzLWxpdmUmc2NvcGU9c2l0ZQ%3d%3d    [Note the long string of seemingly random letters and numbers]
  • Cookies and stored data accumulate in the browser's cache.  Problems can occur when the cache contains old data or has items larger than the maximum size allowed by a web server.
    • Clear your browser's cache, then close & restart the browser. It is necessary to restart the browser after clearing the cache in order to end your current SSO session.
    • Try a different browser to see if the problem persists.
    • If you can't use another browser, open an Incognito or Private mode/window and try again to access the resource(s).
    • Reset your password on the IT Support page: https://www.umsl.edu/technology/support/password.html  Your SSO may have expired, but some programs may still remember the old password or a previous session.

  • No luck?  Try these more general steps:
    • Make sure you have the latest available version of your browser.  Internet Explorer is no longer supported - use another browser.
    • Verify that your operating system is up to date
    • Restart the machine
    • Check for browser extensions that might cause issues
    • Scan for malware & viruses
    • Use the TritonVPN: https://www.umsl.edu/technology/networking/

Additional help if you're still stuck:

  • Contact the library (chat or email is best) to report the problem. Copy & send us any error messages.
  • Contact UMSL's Help Desk (link below).  The permissions or attributes on your account may not identify you as a member of UMSL.  This will block access to most of our electronic resources.
